They accept wrinkles.
Accept your laugh lines like the French do. Wrinkle or dimple? Why? “We’re going to embrace ageing,” adds Thomas. “We’ll aim to live a balanced existence, focusing on all the faces in our lives, not just our own. We’ll live in the now so we may enjoy what we have, not what we’ll never have.
Skin care goes beyond the face, they know.
We’re not discussing décolletage (but neck and chest care is vital). Thomas means that your beauty routine should make you feel happy while simultaneously making you look good.
Others will follow your regimen and your beauty.
Cold showers.
Many Frenchwomen never took long, hot showers because of pre-Napoleon plumbing, says Thomas. Warm showers followed by cold water boost circulation, toning and firming the skin.
They enjoy eating.
Eating healthily is the French way. They eat together and enjoy eating. They eat high-quality food and don’t snack during mealtimes. According to Thomas, “the key to eating like the French is moderation.”
With fresh fruit, whole grains, olive oil, fish, and some dairy and meat, the normal French diet sounds like a Mediterranean diet, which is a natural anti-ager. Eating like this will give your body (and skin) all the nutrition it needs.
They find a skin care routine that works.
Maybe it’s a slower attitude to life or a lesson in patience, but the French “don’t worry when a wrinkle or pimple arises” It’s about finding what works and sticking to it for life. Thomas notes that many American women see skin care as a treatment when a problem emerges, but she prefers the French approach: take preventive precautions so you never need to treat.
“Less is more” is their makeup motto.
When you think of French makeup, you typically picture smudged eyeliner and soft red lipstick. The “done-but-not-done look” Because the focus is on healthy, beautiful skin that doesn’t need much makeup, not covering up skin concerns with layers of product and colour.
In France, radiant skin is valued, so a no-makeup makeup look works, explains Thomas. “In the U.S., women look for quick cures that leave their skin dry, peeling, or damaged, so they buy more makeup. American women find skin care difficult, with many processes, while the French secret is simplicity.”
They drink daily.
The French women enjoy a glass of red wine every day without considering it an extravagance. Instead, it’s part of their culture, something they’d never question (or not doing).
Delicious wine has health and anti-aging advantages. Full of resveratrol and polyphenols, red wine is anti-inflammatory, can inhibit acne bacterium growth, fights free radicals, and promotes heart health, improving circulation (and shine).
According to Thomas, her great-grandmother taught her the best beauty secret: drink one glass of red wine daily and take a 30-minute stroll.
They don’t consider skin care “pampering.”
Unlike their American counterparts, French women recognise a skin care routine, no matter how long or many products are needed, is a fundamental aspect of life. She says, “Pampering isn’t a luxury.” It’s about choosing the best and knowing you deserve a beauty routine that helps you look and feel great.
For them, beauty is a “art de vivre” and should bring joy, not sorrow. Thomas says spa treatments like facials shouldn’t be a luxury. She sees them as a crucial element of a skin care programme and believes the cumulative advantages can increase beauty (even if you DIY in the bathroom!).
