You wake up and begin your day, and then your productivity and motivation suddenly fade. You’ve hit the dreaded afternoon slump, so you reach for an energy drink to keep you alert and get through the rest of the day. Many of us do it, but is it healthy?
Coffee
To be honest, we all enjoy coffee as a source of energy. Thankfully, Sonya gives us the go-ahead to stick with our tried-and-true brew. It is high in antioxidants and has been shown to improve memory, mood, attentiveness, and overall mental function. 3 But keep in mind that more isn’t always better. Too many coffee refills can cause jitters, nervousness, and insomnia. Also, keep in mind that what you put in coffee may outweigh its benefits. Instead of cream and sugar, try adding milk or naturally sweet spices like vanilla extract, cinnamon, or cocoa powder.
Kombucha
Hayley’s favorite natural energy drink is Kombucha, which has been hailed as a drink to improve health. This fermented tea contains probiotics to support gut health and is high in antioxidants and B vitamins to help you get through the afternoon slump. Because kombucha contains caffeine, it is best to consume it in the morning to reap the benefits throughout the day.
The juice of beets
Do you drink your vegetables? Yes, in this case! Beets are high in antioxidants and have health-promoting properties. Brooke suggests beet juice as a healthy alternative for boosting energy for daily activities and even improving athletic performance. Nitrites found in beets are converted in the body to nitric oxide, which aids in blood flow, energy, and endurance.
Coco Water
If you’re bored with plain water and want to add some flavor, try coconut water. It contains antioxidants to boost energy and is lower in sugar than other fruit juices. Gina’s favorite post-workout pick-me-up is coconut water! It contains electrolytes such as magnesium and potassium and is an excellent choice if you need to stay active and/or feel fatigued after exercise.
Water
Although it may appear obvious, many of us do not drink enough water. Tannaz suggests reevaluating your water intake if you’re feeling tired. Water is necessary for good health. It helps with important functions like digestion, fluid electrolyte balance, and joint health, but we lose it all the time through breathing, sweating, and peeing. If you don’t replace it as you go, it can cause dehydration and have a negative impact on your energy.
